Site-specific theatre company to stage new play exploring the lives, loves and controversy surrounding Plymouth’s world famous Tinside Lido.
City campaigners who fought to restore Tinside Pool are being filmed and share their experiences in a theatre play about how pool supporters saved the iconic lido from demolition. This Summer Listed Theatre will take people on a watery romp through the thrills and chills of one of Britain’s best loved lidos. LISTED LIDO is a play based on, and performed in, the iconic Tinside Lido in Plymouth – telling the story of Tinside Lido and the people who use it, the people who saved it, and the people who love it.
The Tinside Action Group was set up in 1998 to fight for the historic site to be restored, and submitted the Grade 2 listing of the complex, which the British government nationally recognised that same year, after a 72,000 signature petition was raised calling for the city council to restore one of Plymouth’s most famous landmarks.
Tinside campaigner, Kevin Kelway who formed the Action Group, said: “I am really proud that LISTED LIDO will be performing on the Hoe this summer and telling the story of Tinside since 1935, and especially the massive campaign to save the much loved site from demolition back in 1998. I am organising a meeting on the 10th July, for producers and actors to meet TAG members who fought with me to save the site. Please contact me if you are interested to be filmed and share your experiences during the late 1990′s, so our story can help other people across the UK looking to save the last of Britain’s outdoor lidos.”
So get ready as Listed Theatre slips into swimsuits from all eras this summer, to tell you about the escapades and glories of Tinside Lido and lidos throughout Britain in their new work, LISTED LIDO.
Jessica Manley, producer of Listed Lido, said: ”In April 2009 Listed Theatre began work to develop a performance piece, exploring and celebrating the history of Broomhill Pool, a derelict lido in Ipswich, Suffolk and the current campaign to save it. Out of this work grew a research project which led us to discover the rich legacy of lidos nationwide. This Summer we will be collecting the fascinating stories of Tinside Lido which survived the blitz, bore witness to the first ever bikinis, saw generations of teenagers show off (some in the well-known Tinside beauty pageants) and trained swimmers to cross the channel.”
“It is this cross section of society that Listed Lido brings to life, celebrating the newly regenerated Tinside Lido and the successful campaign which saved it whilst documenting the continuing fights for other lidos under threat of closure or demolition, going on across the country. It is so important that we save these lidos which are valuable urban oases, fusing the ideals of democracy with inspiring architecture, said Jessica
